Question : What do you think about socially engaged Buddhist monks who transgress the Vinaya and join the political demonstration against the Thai government?

Answer : Socially engaged Buddhist monk are monks who determine to save all social beings from trouble. They basically act out of their loving kindness and compassion. They do not take the meaning of the Vinaya literally. For example, though the Vinaya forbids a monk to touch a woman, he may transgress it to save her life. Similarly, though the Vinaya forbids a monk to participate in a war or a conflict between two parties, a monk can be present in either side to calm down the situation or to bar the loss of lives. I think that it can be accepted if a monk transgress the Vinaya through wisdom and careful consideration for the best of the Buddhist religion and for peaceful happiness of all beings. The Buddha's teaching should not be blindly followed, should it?
